Drum Lessons for Ages 10–15 in West Bend, WI | Erik Holmes

A Structured, Supportive Approach for Growing Musicians

My drum lessons for students ages 10–15 are designed to support what kids are already doing musically—and help them do it better. Whether your child is involved in school band, jazz band, solo & ensemble festivals, percussion ensembles, church worship bands, or rock bands with friends, lessons are structured to reinforce those goals while building long-term musicianship.

This age range is a critical window. Students are old enough to understand fundamentals, but still flexible enough to build strong habits that will carry them through high school and beyond. These drum lessons are designed specifically for students ages 10–15 in West Bend, Wisconsin and nearby communities.

How Lessons Are Structured

Each weekly lesson is built around three core pillars. Every student works on all three, with the balance adjusted to match their interests, school requirements, and upcoming performances.

1. Hand Technique & Fundamentals

Strong hands make everything else easier.

Students work on:

  • Proper grip and stroke technique
  • Hand-to-hand consistency and control
  • Speed, endurance, and dynamic range
  • Snare drum technique for school band and festivals

This technical foundation supports concert band, marching band, jazz band, and drum set playing—and helps prevent bad habits that can slow progress later.

2. Music Reading & Rhythm Skills

Music reading in percussion lessons in West Bend

Reading music builds confidence and opens doors.

Lessons include:

  • Reading snare drum and drum set notation
  • Time signatures, subdivisions, and counting skills
  • Preparation for Solo & Ensemble festivals
  • Sight-reading skills for school ensembles

Students who read well tend to advance faster in school band and feel more confident auditioning for percussion ensembles, jazz bands, and State Honors Bands.

3. Songs, Styles & Performance

Music should be fun—and practical.

Students apply technique and reading skills by:

  • Learning full songs and drum parts
  • Studying rock, pop, jazz, funk, and worship styles
  • Playing along with recordings and backing tracks
  • Preparing music for bands, gigs, or school performances

This performance-focused approach keeps students motivated while connecting lessons to real-world music-making, including rock bands and church worship teams.

Supporting School & Community Music Programs

Lessons are intentionally aligned with what students are already involved in, including:

  • School concert band & percussion sections
  • Jazz band auditions and chart preparation
  • Solo & Ensemble festival music
  • School percussion ensembles
  • State Honors Band auditions
  • Church worship bands and community groups
  • Rock bands and independent music projects

Performance Opportunities: Student Recitals

Erik Holmes Percussion Studio Drum Recital

All students are invited to participate in studio recitals held twice each year:

  • May Recital
  • November Recital
    • The November recital is a themed recital in which all students get to pick a song to perform based around a common theme.
    • Themes from past recitals include Music from the 1980’s, One-hit Wonders, British Invasion, etc.

Recitals are held at The Bend Theater, giving students the experience of performing on a real stage in a professional venue.

These performances help students:

  • Build confidence
  • Set clear goals
  • Learn how to prepare for a performance
  • Celebrate their progress with family and friends

Participation is encouraged but never mandatory.

A Focus on Long-Term Growth

As students move closer to high school, schedules become busier with homework, sports, and extracurricular activities. Building strong fundamentals now allows students to continue progressing—even when practice time becomes limited later.

My goal is not just to help students play drums today, but to set them up for success as musicians for years to come. Many students continue to play music into adulthood, as hobbyists, semi-professionals, and professionals.
