My 5 (or 6 or 7) year old really wants to play drums. Can you start them early?

No. Starting drum lessons after a child turns 8 years old offers numerous benefits for young learners. At this age, children typically possess the physical coordination and cognitive development necessary to grasp fundamental drumming techniques effectively.

Waiting until 8 allows them to better understand rhythm, coordination, and musical concepts, leading to more productive and enjoyable lessons. Moreover, delaying lessons until this age can prevent frustration and burnout, ensuring a positive and sustainable learning experience. By starting at 8, children are more likely to approach drumming with enthusiasm, setting the stage for long-term musical growth and fulfillment. I’m excited for your child to start drum lessons once they turn 8 years old in my studio located in West Bend, WI.
